Proper Positioning: How Long Do Retainers Last?

Now that you’ve completed Invisalign, you’re probably thrilled to show off your recently straightened smile. However, you might be surprised to learn that you need to wear a retainer after treatment to prevent your teeth from reverting to their previous places.

Depending on your circumstances, you might be required to wear one of these oral appliances for several years. Thankfully, they can last anywhere from 5 to 10 years, depending on how well they’re cared for. If you’re unsure whether it’s time to replace your retainer, continue reading to learn 3 indicators that it’s nearing the end of its life!

Sign #1: It’s Cracked

Most dental retainers have an acrylic base that contains metal ‘wires’ that anchor to your teeth to hold them in place. Although the materials used are durable enough to last many years, they’re not completely invincible. For instance, it can chip or break if you accidentally drop it onto a hard enough surface or from a great enough height. It can also develop cracks if it’s left out to dry too long, giving bacteria in your mouth ideal places to thrive.

Unfortunately, this increases the likelihood of developing common oral issues, such as tooth decay or gum disease, in addition to chronic bad breath (halitosis). You can prevent this by removing your retainer twice daily to brush and floss your teeth as well as scrub your prosthetic with a soft-bristled toothbrush and mild dish soap that won’t abrade the surface.

Sign #2: It Feels Loose

Although retainers are resilient, they’re not built to last forever. As the materials wear down over time, the device that once fit like a glove can start to feel loose or unstable. If it starts to slip around in your mouth, it’s not able to exert enough pressure to ensure your pearly whites remain in their updated positions.

If your oral appliance doesn’t fit correctly, you should let your dentist know right away so they can replace it before your teeth relapse to their original spots.

Sign #3: It Has Buildup

Did you know that a 2011 study found that over 50% of retainers carry bacteria that aren’t typically found in your oral microbiome? If you want yours to last, it’s essential that you care for it correctly. Although it can’t get cavities, germs and plaque can still form residue on its surfaces, increasing your vulnerability to oral issues.

Cleaning it regularly prevents plaque and tartar from forming. However, even with diligent daily washings, your retainer can accumulate calcium deposits on its surfaces due to frequent rinsing with hard water. If yours has built up residue, it’s time to request a replacement.

If you’re worried about the condition of your retainer, you can gain peace of mind by scheduling a routine checkup and cleaning with your dentist!
